Volleyball

Venice 3, Sarasota 0

VENICE − On a memorable evening, the Venice High volleyball team opened defense of a state title with a 3-0 win over visiting Sarasota High 25-15, 25-19, 25-17 Tuesday in the season opener for both teams before a packed house at the Teepee.

It was Venice coach Brian Wheatley’s 700th career coaching victory as he began his 30th season.

In 29 seasons, Wheatley has won 27 district championships, 14 regional crowns and 6 state titles.

High school roundup (Aug 21-26): Mooney volleyball moves to 2-0 with victory over Palmetto (2)

Junior Summer Kohler led Venice with 18 kills, 17 in the final two sets. Senior Hilary Hupp had seven kills and 1 ½ blocks. Seniors JaLynn Gardner and Jayda Lanham finished with four kills and two blocks each. Carli Waggoner served four aces.

Venice returns to action Thursday at Riverview High. Sarasota is off until Monday when it plays host to Lakewood Ranch High.

Sarasota takeaways

1. Freshman outside hitter Liza Collier had four kills and four aces. Senior Aubrie Roe finished with two kills and two blocks. Senior Jillian Davidson contributed three kills. For the first regular season match of the season, second-year Sailors coach Daris Rodriguez saw some good things. “I was very impressed with our performance tonight,” she said.

2. Rodriguez credited the Sailors for making adjustments during the match. “How quickly the players were able to adjust to my instruction,” she said. “From last year to this year, serve receive is the big game changer.”

3. Coming off a preseason where the Sailors lost to Riverview High and defeated Southeast High in classic matches, there was a reason Sarasota scheduled Venice on opening night. “We wanted to have a good standard for the rest of the season,” Rodriguez said. “We look forward to face them in districts.”

Venice (Wheatley) takeaways

1. Wheatley began coaching in 1994, taking over for the late Barry Rossheim. Wheatley picked up wins No. 100 in 1997, 200 in 2002, 300 in 2005, 400 in 2010, 500 in 2014, 600 in 2018. “It’s a culmination of all of our players over the years, dedicated assistants, fans, community,” Wheatley said. “It’s a community thing. That’s just a number. It’s about the journey.”

2. Two of those seasons, the milestone victory came during a state championship run (2005 and 2014). Ironically, like Tuesday’s victory, win No. 400 was the first win of the season. Wheatley has a little ways to go to set the state record for volleyball victories in a career. Louise Crocco of Cardinal Gibbons in Fort Lauderdale went 1,132-113 in her 39 years of coaching. “A lot of people write books on how to become successful,” Wheatley said. “There’s not a lot of books on how to stay successful. The way you stay successful is to have really good people around you.”

3. With his 700 victories, Wheatley is approaching another milestone. He has 198 losses. His 100th loss was the fourth in the 2009 season, coming against Leon of Tallahassee in the Premier Tournament.
